This is a multi-year Climate Justice project implemented by Womankind Kenya in Partnership with African Women Development Group (FEMNET) in Kenya Garissa County.
The project is part of the larger African Activists for Climate Justice Project implemented in 8 countries in Africa, uniting five dynamic consortium partners—AYC, FEMNET, OXFAM NOVIB, NATURAL JUSTICE, and PACJA—each with strategic strengths in youth mobilization, women-led advocacy, resilient community building, amplifying African narratives, and locally driven adaptation initiatives. We passionately connect grassroots communities to regional and global processes, supported by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The AACJ focuses on 5 outcome areas including:

Developing and spreading African Climate Narratives
Strengthening Human Rights Frameworks
Adaption and Mitigation
Shifting Policies
The AACJ program has been at the forefront of locally led climate action in Africa, empowering communities and driving change across the continent. Through a range of impactful interventions, including awareness campaigns, capacity-building workshops, and engagement with decision-makers, AACJ has successfully raised awareness about the urgent need for climate justice. By mobilizing and empowering diverse segments of society, including women, young people, and influential entities, AACJ has fostered a sense of collective responsibility and collaboration in addressing the impacts of climate change. With a focus on sustainability and scalability, AACJ’s efforts have laid the foundation for long-term resilience, adaptation, and mitigation strategies, ensuring a more just and sustainable future for Africa and its people.
AACJ WORK IN KENYA IN GARISSA COUNTY
Climate crisis is one of the most pressing challenges facing the world today, Garissa is one of the counties that is most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. With frequent Climate Change vulnerabilities like droughts, floods, Women, Children and Vulnerable groups like PLWDs and old age are the disproportionally impacted.
The impacts of Climate Change vulnerabilities experienced in Garissa have led to displacement, Loss of Lives, Malnutrition, Loss of Livelihood, Food insecurities, outbreak of diseases and conflicts due to Scarce resources.
The AACJ Project has promoted Locally Led Climate Action making a significant difference in Garissa, by empowering communities decision-making power has been channeled at the local level. Through the project Climate Justice Grassroot networks capacities have been strengthened empowering women and youth led CSOs with knowledge to advocate for climate justice and raise the voices of those on the frontlines, particularly women and girls who are most affected by the climate crisis.
So far, Remarkable results as been witnessed, the Networks, and movements in Garissa have been at the frontline actively participating and influencing decision making process and demanding for Climate Just Narratives as witnessed during the development CIDP3.
