Humanitarian assistance to drought affected communities in Wajir and Garissa Counties (2022-2024)

Implemented by Womankind Kenya in Partnership with SAVE THE CHILDREN funded by USAID

In the recent years, Kenya has been impacted by the Climate Change vulnerabilities like Floods and Drought which have intensified and increased in frequency. These climate change risks have exacerbated preexisting water scarcity and agricultural challenges The Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) region of Kenya has experienced four back-to-back below-average rainy seasons, leaving at least 4.35 million people in need of humanitarian assistance. Late rainfall onset was recorded in October to December short rain season confirming the meteorological and FEWSNET projections for another failed rain season, leading to a truly unprecedented situation, unseen in recent history.

In the context of Garissa County, the community is pastoral in Nature and is dependent on natural resources for livelihood. These vulnerabilities have resulted in Food insecurity, Inter and intra Community Conflict due to scarcity of resource, disease outbreak, displacement, and loss of livelihood. Lack of access to clean drinking water and food have far reaching consequence, particularly for vulnerable groups, including Women, Children, elderly and PLWDS who are at risk   of malnutrition and other disease outbreaks.
