Climate change is one of the most significant challenges facing communities in northern and coastal Kenya. Rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, and increasingly severe floods are not only environmental crises but also profound threats to human rights and livelihoods.
These impacts are disproportionately felt by women, who often bear the responsibility of securing food, water, and livelihoods for their families.
At the heart of our climate change work is a commitment to building resilience, providing lifesaving support, and advocating for climate justice, with a focus on empowering women and marginalized communities as agents of change
Our climate action is built on three key pillars:
Our strategies
We respond to climate-induced emergencies, such as floods and droughts, by providing:
Food assistance to mitigate hunger and malnutrition.
Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services to reduce disease risks and ensure access to Water and hygiene facilities.
Nutritional support to protect the health of vulnerable populations, especially women and children.
GBV Protection initiatives to mitigate GBV risks during emergincies
Building Community Resilience
To address the long-term impacts of climate change, we implement sustainable and adaptive solutions, including:
Investment in Smart Agriculture
Distributing drought-resistant seeds to improve agricultural productivity.
Providing livestock feed and technical training to pastoralists.
Supporting livelihood diversification, such as beekeeping and river-based agriculture.
Encouraging the adoption of climate-resilient water infrastructure and measures to reduce crop and post-harvest losses.
A cornerstone of our resilience work is the survivor- and community-led response (SCLR) approach, which empowers communities to design and implement solutions that directly address their unique challenges. Women and marginalized groups are central to this process, ensuring inclusive and sustainable outcomes.
Climate Justice Advocacy
Climate change disproportionately affects those furthest from decision-making power. Through our advocacy efforts, we amplify the voices of communities, enabling them to influence policies and decisions that affect their lives. Our work includes:
Building grassroots networks to raise awareness of climate issues.
Sharing community narratives through diverse media, including poetry, art, and policy papers.
Creating forums for dialogue between communities and policymakers to drive meaningful change.
