At Womankind Kenya (WOKIKE), peacebuilding is a core aspect of our mission to foster resilient, cohesive, and peaceful communities, particularly in areas that are vulnerable to conflict. Our peacebuilding efforts aim to address the root causes of violence, promote social harmony, and empower marginalized groups, especially women and youth, to take active roles in building lasting peace in their communities.
We adopt a comprehensive approach to peacebuilding, which includes conflict resolution, countering violent extremism (CVE), and strengthening the capacity of local communities to prevent and respond to conflict.
Our strategies focus on
Empowering Communities to Prevent and Mitigate Conflict We work closely with local communities to enhance their capacity to address and resolve conflicts before they escalate. By promoting dialogue and cooperation between community members, local authorities, and security forces, we strengthen the social fabric of communities and foster trust among all stakeholders.
Enhancing Women’s and Youth’s Roles in Peacebuilding Womankind Kenya places particular emphasis on the active involvement of women and youth in peace and security processes. Recognizing their critical roles in fostering peace, we work to ensure that women and youth are not only participants but also leaders in peacebuilding initiatives. We provide platforms for their voices to be heard and empower them with the skills and knowledge needed to play active roles in conflict resolution and peacebuilding.
Addressing the Drivers of Violent Extremism Through community-based interventions, we aim to reduce the factors that drive violent extremism, such as unemployment, marginalization, and lack of opportunities. By providing youth with skills, resources, and alternative pathways to success, we help them become resilient to extremist ideologies and actively engage in positive, constructive activities that contribute to the community’s well-being.
Promoting Social Cohesion Wokike focuses on creating inclusive communities where everyone, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or background, can participate in the decision-making process. We facilitate initiatives that encourage understanding, tolerance, and respect among diverse groups, fostering a sense of belonging and unity.
Strengthening Local Capacities for Peace and Security We work with local leaders, community groups, and security actors to build their capacities to manage and resolve conflicts effectively. By strengthening their understanding of peace processes and enhancing their ability to respond to conflicts, we help create more peaceful and secure communities.
Our approach
Our approach to peacebuilding is rooted in the belief that true and lasting peace is achieved when all members of society are empowered, heard, and involved in the process. Through these efforts, Womankind Kenya is helping to create a more inclusive and peaceful society, where individuals, especially those from marginalized groups, have the opportunity to contribute to and benefit from a more just and harmonious world.
